On Saturday night over 500 guests celebrated the launch of the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery’s signature exhibition the Mid West Art Prize, and applaud the artists who secured this year’s awards.

Perth-based artist Mikaela Castledine won the City of Greater Geraldton Overall Award for Excellence (Acquisitive) for her sculpture “Catch”, which was described by the Judges as “a timeless and deserving piece that is beautifully crafted and considered.”

The Pia Wadjarri Remote Community and School in collaboration with artist Nicole Monks took out the Yamaji Art Aboriginal Arts Award for their video “ganun-ganunmanha (tread lightly)”, performed and filmed on site in the Pia Wadjarri community.

Leah Vlatko’s “Study of Banksia” claimed the Bowman-Bright Mid West Artist Award and Elliot Brown’s “Glimpse” secured the Latitude Jewellers Youth Award.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn commended the winners.

“This year’s Mid West Art Prize exhibition is a high-quality event, which is a testament to everyone involved,” he said.

“Congratulations to the overall winner Mikaela Castledine, also the Pia Wadjarri Remote Community and School, Leah Vlatko and Elliot Brown.

“My thanks to all our valued sponsors, contractors and staff who achieved this wonderful event under the stars.”

Attendees were treated to live music throughout the evening with entertainment from the one and only ‘Famous Sharron’.

All artworks featured in the exhibition have not previously been exhibited and will be on show and for sale until Sunday 30 January 2022.

Visitors to the exhibition are encouraged to vote for their favourite artwork, which will be announced as the Local Member Lara Dalton MLA People’s Choice Award in early February 2022.
