Film restoration talk and screening | My Brilliant Career (1979)

Past Event

As part of the Starstruck exhibition, GRAG is delighted to welcome a special 'Guest' expert from Canberra for a public talk about film restoration. Elena Guest, the passionate Restores Manager from Australia's National Film and Sound Archive, will be speaking about the processes of conserving and restoring films and answering your questions about the Australian film industry. This talk will be followed by a special screening of one of the NFSA's restored films, My Brilliant Career.
Starring a freshly-graduated Judy Davis, My Brilliant Career was produced by Margaret Fink, directed by Gillian Armstrong, and exploded into critical acclaim on the world stage in 1979 with reviews such as this one from London's Sunday Times:
"A strong, confident, modern love story, even though set in the 1890s. Like many recent Australian films, it speaks out with a real woman's voice - a sound rarely heard in the cinema, since the women we see are usually creations of male fantasy, wishful thinking, sentimentality or even hatred."
This screening is free, but places are limited so please register. Ms Guest's talk has unlimited places and all are welcome.
This has been made possible with thanks to the National Film and Sound Archive and the National Portrait Gallery.
