Attractions galore this Australia Day

Australia Day will see the Geraldton Foreshore, QEII Seniors and Community Centre and Doc Docherty Pool play host to a range of events for the whole community.

As well as the tried and tested favourites there will be a new venue for the Citizenship and Community Citizen of the Year Award Ceremonies and first-time performances by new entertainers to enjoy on the day.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune is looking forward to seeing the community enjoy what is on offer for the occasion.

“Australia Day can be a sensitive occasion for many in our community and this has been carefully considered in the event planning,” he said.

“To encourage attendance at the Citizenship and Community Citizen of the Year Award Ceremonies both events will be held in the air-conditioned comfort of the QEII Centre from 10.30am, so we avoid the afternoon heat as we pay tribute to the award nominees and welcome our newest Australians.

“I am particularly looking forward to seeing Binmaga Dance Group who will be performing at our Mullewa event for the first time, as well as seeing everyone enjoying all the attractions along the Geraldton Foreshore and joining our seniors for the traditional afternoon tea and concert at the QEII Centre.”

Geraldton’s event will feature live music at Stow Gardens between 5 – 8.30pm by bands Solitary Sounds, Karloo Rockers, Tommy Gun and headliners Playlunch.

Over in Mullewa, community members will be able to hang out at the Doc Docherty Pool from 7.30am where there will be a free barbecue breakfast followed by a performance from Binmaga Dance Group and the Community Citizen of the Year Awards.

Events along the Geraldton Foreshore will commence from 7.30am and continue throughout the day before culminating in Europcar Fireworks scheduled weather permitting for 8.30pm.

“Definitely bring a picnic blanket, some good company as well as your appetite and treat yourself to something delicious at this laid back event,” added Mayor Clune.
