  • Wooleen Station

Wooleen Station is a 378,729 acre pastoral lease, located in the Shire of Murchison, 700kms northeast of Perth, Western Australia. Wooleen exists for the purpose of finding sustainable land uses and these include conservation, tourism and beef production. Wooleen’s tourism enterprise aims to cultivate a deeper understanding of our environment and a connection to the country. Guests come to Wooleen Station to experience the vast open spaces of the outback, diverse flora and fauna and resilient landscape – its an amazing place to watch mother nature at work. Wooleen is open each year from April to October. Station Details In the heart of the dramatic Murchison region, Wooleen Station is a cattle station that is playing a leading role in preserving and sustaining the unique ecology of the region. Covering over a quarter of a million acres of picturesque outback, Wooleen Station Stay is dedicated to the restoration of the rangelands and exists for the purpose of finding sustainable land uses and healthy ways to provide food in the future. The first part of this equation is to recover the landscape so that it can function in a healthy way. The second part of the equation is finding a way to sustainably use the land for pastoralism and responsible industries once it has recovered. We believe this can be accomplished if environmental sustainability is never compromised. The Homestead is listed by the Australian National Trust and offers a luxurious way to experience the Australian outback. With delicious home-style cooking, a vast cellar of Western Australian wines and magnificent formal dining room, you are assured of a culinary experience of Australian outback you will not forget. And after dinner, you can enjoy the full-size Billiard table. The 1200sqm Homestead with wide colonial verandahs is nestled in an oasis of spectacular, landscaped gardens. Surrounding heritage buildings and walking trails create a one-of-a-kind opportunity to look back in time to the hey-day of the Murchison region. The Guesthouses are 2 bedrooms, with bathroom, separate toilet, full kitchen, dining/living area, open fireplace, and outdoor alfresco areas. The buildings are a mixture of new, natural and recycled materials with many of the doors and windows being rescued from an old homestead in the pastoral region. This mix of materials gives the impression of an older character building but the freshness of new accommodation. All linen and towels are supplied and the beds are made up with beautiful feather and down quilts and big European cushions on queen sized beds. Built in 2004, the guesthouses are located approx. 150m from the main homestead in a natural bush setting with immediate gardens made up of native plants for privacy. Our Outback Camping options include the cliffs of the mighty Murchison River or the amphitheater of the breakaway Rocky Outcrop campsite. Set up your tent, camper trailer or caravan and watch the milky way as you fall asleep! Prior to setting out from the homestead, sign your ‘commitment to country’ document and join Wooleen Station in their goal of land rehabilitation and sustainable grazing. Each site has its own fire-pit, vermicomposting toilet and plenty of space for you to explore. Wooleen Lake and its heritage-listed Wetlands are a semi-permanent home to a vast array of animal and bird life when its full and when its dry. In Spring, the land comes to life with a multitude of wildflowers after the correct winter rainfall. The Murchison River runs through the Station, only a short drive from the Homestead. Wooleen’s nature-based station stay offers a multitude of experiences, from colonial and Aboriginal heritage tourism to nature-based tours. The vegetation and the quality of the land make the property one of the finest stations in Australia. This is a new kind of holiday. If you are interested in ecology and the culture of the Australian bush then Wooleen is the place for you.
