This month marks a solemn milestone in Australia’s naval history with the anniversary of the sinking of the HMAS Sydney II.

It will be 84 years since the 645 crew lost their lives in Australia’s greatest naval tragedy and the community along with dignitaries and relatives of the fallen will come together for a commemoration service on Wednesday 19 November.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune reflected on the enduring significance of the event.

“The battle between HMAS Sydney II and the HSK Kormoran is deeply woven into Geraldton’s identity,” he said.

“Each year, we gather to connect and pay tribute to the brave souls who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom.

“I encourage everyone to join us in remembering this poignant moment in our history.”

The commemoration will be held on Wednesday 19 November between 5.45pm - 7pm at the HMAS Sydney II Memorial.

The main address will be delivered by Matt Anderson PSM – Director of the Australian War Memorial.

A free shuttle bus service transporting community members to the event will depart from the QEII Seniors and Community Centre carpark at 5pm and from the Geraldton City RSL approximately at 5.10pm.

The bus will return to the QEII Centre and Geraldton City RSL departing from the Memorial at 7pm.

The Gummer Avenue carpark will be closed for this event.

More information regarding the event can be found on the City’s website.
